Position Overview

Serves as a primary avionics engineer, with experience in parameter analysis, ACMS/AOC/CMF/ACMF databases, SATCOM, ADS-B, weather radar, TCAS, ATC and transponder systems.  Performs data analysis and validation for DFDR, FDIMU/DFDAU.  Assists with troubleshooting systems, building and maintaining aircraft and component software configurations, and all digital platform interfaces, often working with Flight Operations and Flight Crews.

Also includes 787 unique items such as e-Enabling, Boeing GBST tooling for modifiable software creation, fiber optics, electrical load analysis and general troubleshooting on that airframe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintains and coordinates changes to the aircraft avionics and software configurations to maintain up to date standards and requirements
  • Ability to work with the following systems: Air Traffic Control (ATC), ADS-B, Mode-S Transponder (XPDR) Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS).  Weather Radar (WXR) including Predictive Windshear (PWS), Terrain Awareness & Warning System (TAWS), including Reactive Windshear (RWS) and Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) initiatives
  • Ability to work with the following systems: Autopilot and Auto-throttle, SATCOM and VHF Radio (Voice and Data), Power Systems, Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Flight Data Interface and management unit (FDIMU)/Digital Flight Data Acquisition Unit (DFDAU) to include parameter analysis and validation
  • Ability to work with the following systems: Aircraft Condition Monitoring Function (ACMF) and Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS) to include database modification with Boeing GBST Plug-in or AGS IV, respectively, VOR/ILS, Data Loading system, and Datalink
  • Updating and maintaining wiring diagrams, system schematic manuals, troubleshooting manuals, as required
  • Assists in troublshooting of avionics systems for day to day operations
  • Works with customers to develop and document and avionics and electrical system requirements on complex multi- tiered projects
  • Coordinates work to analyze and translate avionics requirements into system architecture, hardware and software designs and interface specifications
  • The position requires application of engineering principles to research technical, operational, and quality issues, as well as determining interim and final engineering solutions, and responding to OEM/Vendor and internal questions and reported problems through internal and external communication
  • Prepares, creates, reviews and approves engineering documentation in accordance with HA Engineering Standard Operating Procedures and processes. Includes repairs, modifications, alterations and STC’s
  • Utilizes technical expertise and practical experience to disposition complex technical issues
  • Researches, recommends and approves part alternatives
  • Substantiates repairs/modifications in accordance with industry accepted practices and Federal Aviation Administration applicable requirements
  • Reviews documents including CMM’s, Service Letters, Service Bulletins, FARs, CFR’s, Airworthiness Directives, and other manufacturer issued publications
  • Provide on-site support to Maintenance
  • Ability to read and understand Maintenance Manuals (IPC, AMM, WDM, SSM, TSM, SRM, FIM, etc.) to assist in troubleshooting
  • Maintains and updates maintenance manuals, OEM and internal revisions, approve and authorize part master records in TRAX by researching substantiation documentation
  • Research reliability trends and assist with actioning improvements on components and airframes
  • Interface with equipment vendors, industry partners, MRO providers and regulatory authorities
  • Collaboration with Planning, MRO’s, Quality Assurance, Supply, Materials and Maintenance for process improvements as needed
  • Participates in resolution of design and improvements to maintenance programs & procedures as needed
  • Timely accomplishment of assignments coming into the group, including resolution of CARs, CERIs, review/disposition of Alert Level investigations, IRG, MRRB, CAS activities, etc.
  • Ability to work on 717, 787, A321 and A330 fleet types
  • Professional development such as training, conferences and other related duties as assigned


Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline from an accredited university, or alternatively 3 years of relevant experience in addition to technical education such as an A&P license
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat etc.
  • Able to obtain an SIDA/AOA badge
  • Valid driver’s license and passport
  • Strong analytical and operational business skills
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects to balance work within the group, ensuring important technical updates are provided to maintenance documentation in an expeditious manner
  • Must be able to promptly respond after hours (24/7).  Must be able to travel, work flexible hours and work beyond regular hours, including weekends and holidays and non-traditional hours
  • This position is considered as an essential worker, required to work on-site to support Tech Ops and available for field assignments as required
  • Good organizational and prioritization skills and a demonstrated ability of acting as an effective change agent
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to summarize complex technical matters.  Must be able to confidently and professionally represent Hawaiian to members of federal authorities and industry
  • Must have received the COVID-19 Vaccine by date of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering / Aerospace Degree or 3 + years’ experience in aviation
  • Familiarity with TRAX maintenance software, particularly engineering module, authoring controls and task cards
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prepare and present progress updates to senior management, conduct basic financial analysis to determine cost/benefit relationships of engineering projects, and prepare business cases
  • Commercial aviation experience with FAR 121, in the field of Aircraft Maintenance, Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Regulatory Compliance
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (Parts 25, 121, etc).  Familiarity with Airworthiness Directives and Manufacturer Service Bulletins
  • Experience and familiarity with certification, STCs, modification and repair of complex aircraft systems, components and installation on Part 121 aircraft.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of aircraft/engine maintenance and specification documents, particularly IPC, AMM, WDM, SSM, TSM, SRM, FIM, etc.)
  • 717, 787, A321 and/or A330 experience
  • Familiarity or experience with Avionics for all HA fleet types (717, A321, A330, 787), including troublshooting, testing, airframe and component software modifications.  Ability to understand complex wiring and electronics
